We’re excited to announce the opening of a new feature at the Club grounds — our very own Potty Shed complete with a composting toilet and more space that will ultimately be handicapped accessible!
The biggest expense each year has been rental of a Port-a-potty, and the opportunity to purchase a small shed came our way, along with the idea to shift to a compostable option. Fast forward to many generous donors (watch for a complete listing of these folks!) and a lot of hard work and leadership by Teri Bullis, our Club President. Teri is gifted with carpentry and home renovation skills and she is DETERMINED when it comes to getting things done!
The shed will be open for use in mid July and does come with some how-to’s for proper use and maintenance! We’re posting those details here for anyone willing to look ahead or with questions.
Here’s the overall instructions:
Our new Composting Toilet system comes with some rules for use – please have a read before using it to make sure it works properly and we are compliance with requirements by the Goshen Board of Health.
To simplify we are going to use the terms #1 (Pee) and #2 (Poop).
This Toilet functions by separating #1 into the front and #2 into the back of the unit. This happens simply when using the Toilet however EVERYONE must SIT while going #2, boys and men included! There is little smell with these toilets, as long as the #1 pee goes to the front and lands in a separate container from the #2 poop. It’s important that the #2 trap door and lid is closed after every use.
The #1 waste flows to a separate chamber in the front of the Toilet which will be emptied at the end of each use day and disposed of directly. Be sure that the lever on the left closing the trap door for the #2 area is CLOSED. Use the toilet, spritz a little vinegar spray inside and close the lid.
The #2 compartment of the Toilet has been pre-loaded with peat moss material that helps turn #2 waste into composted material. After going #1 and before going #2, open the trap door on the left for #2 use, use the toilet, follow with our special composting toilet paper, sprinkle some shavings from the container nearby, close the trap door on the left and slowly turn the crank wheel by hand a few times to mix material. Close the lid.

Please only dispose of any sanitary napkins or tampons into the waste receptacle which will also be emptied at the end of the day.
